The only criminal gang in Malta that has never had any dealings with Prime Minister Robert Abela has said it does not know what it is doing wrong.
Abela has been under intense scrutiny since it was revealed he had been involved in a suspicious property deal with Christian Borg, who faces kidnapping charges and a police investigation into alleged money laundering.
While he was still an MP, the Prime Minister also provided legal services to the Agius brothers, known as Tal-Maksar, who have been charged with supplying the explosives used to murder Daphne Caruana Galizia.
But another crime family from Gharghur, known as Tal-Mannara, says it finds its lack of relations with Abela highly upsetting.
“It seems like the Prime Minister is involved with every gang in the country, except us. Speaking honestly, it makes us feel inadequate,” said Saviour Calleja, head of the Tal-Mannara family.
“Maybe it’s because we aren’t that big and only engage in a modest amount of drug trafficking and fuel smuggling. But we still need legal services and shouldn’t have to settle for some small-time corrupt lawyer when everyone else has the leader of the country on retainer. It’s just not fair,” he added.
“Maybe if we put Bobby’s face on all our cars, he’ll provide us with some ‘consultancy’. Then again they aren’t Porsches or Ferraris – only humble BMWs and Audis stolen from the UK – and therefore undeserving of his likeness.”
Mr Calleja’s brother, Mario, struck a more self-reflective tone.
“You know what they say – if everwhere you go people smell shit, you should probably look under your shoe. If we expand our operations, move into new markets like sex trafficking, and maybe kill a journalist or two, then maybe the Prime Minister will notice us,” he said.
