The Prime Minister insisted yesterday that creating more urban parks in Malta is not something he or any other human can do.
Muscat was speaking at a political event in Żebbug, during which he addressed concerns about over-development.
“There are those who want the Government to somehow create green spaces out of thin air for people who live in over-built places like Sliema,” Muscat told the crowd of Labour supporters.
“Are they expecting us to play God? Everyone knows that it is only the Almighty Creator who can cause trees to spring up and grass to grow with just a thought,” he said.
Muscat insisted there was nothing he would like more than to turn Malta into a giant, shady grove filled with indigenous trees and the sound of birdsong.
“But the fact is, I am not a deity,” he said as the crowd chanted his name.
Muscat added that if a plot of land becomes available, then he, as a mere mortal with no supernatural powers, has no choice but to oversee the construction of a hotel, petrol station or supermarket on that site.
“I can do a car park, but that’s pretty much it,” the Prime Minister added.
“And in any case, can’t everyone just go to Buskett?” he asked.
At that point, an aide walked up to the podium and whispered into Muscat’s ear.
“I’m sorry, I’ve just been informed that Buskett is actually man-made, and that the PA have approved a 7-star hotel on the site of it. Maybe just stay at home,” the Prime Minister said.
