A Maltese mum and dad have added an ‘open minded’ twist to their baby son’s quċċija celebration – by including a dildo to the standard choice of objects.
The quċċija is a Maltese tradition in which a baby celebrating its first birthday is presented with a number of different objects spread out on the floor, with each object representing a different profession. The first object the baby crawls towards and touches is meant to show what it will be when it grows up.
Sex work is not typically included in the list of potential careers.
“We included all the usual objects, of course – a first aid kit for a doctor, toothbrush for a dentist, paintbrush for an artist, and all that. But then we thought, what if we end up damaging little Aiden psychologically and he becomes a stripper or a porn star or a male prostitute?” the baby’s mum, Karen Zahra, told Bis-Serjetà.
“If that happened, the only way we’d be able to live with ourselves would be if we knew his bad life choices had nothing to do with us and were instead pre-ordained and revealed in a fortune-telling ceremony. So Karen added her bright pink dildo to the choice of objects,” added Aiden’s dad, Robert.
Not everyone in the Zahra family agreed with the addition, however.
“My dad was like, ‘Aiden is Maltese. There’s no way he’ll become a porn star. Don’t give him unrealistic expectations.’ Just because he chose an abacus in his quċċija and ended up becoming an accountant and hating it,” Karen said, adding that he came round eventually.
In the end, baby Aiden didn’t go for the dildo after all.
“He actually grabbed the rosary beads, which frankly has made us even more worried about his future,” said Robert.
