PN councillor Justin Schembri has offered to put up Matteo Salvini in his home, after the Italian interior minister was sidelined this morning by a newly formed coalition.
Last week, Schembri expressed admiration for Salvini’s hardline stance on immigration. But following an agreement between Movimento Cinque Stelle and the Partito Democratico, the Italian has been shunted aside.
“I believe we should always help politicians in need,” Schembri said in a Facebook post.
“Salvini is fleeing an unstable, dysfunctional country where politicians can find themselves unemployed from one day to the next, and I believe we have a moral duty to help him.
Schemrbi added that, since his controversial Facebook post last week, several people had asked him why he didn’t invite Salvini into his home if he liked him so much.
“I think such arguments are stupid and childish, but to show my solidarity with Salvini, I’ve offered to put him up in my spare bedroom for as long as he needs. He can also eat as much of my food as he likes,” he wrote.
Schembri ended the post with “#SalviniWelcome”.
Following the announcement that Giuseppe Conti had been given a mandate to form a new government, Salvini is reported to have set sail for Malta in a rubber dinghy.
The Maltese government is expected to bar him from entering Maltese ports.
