Alex Dalli, the director of Corradino Correctional facility, has defended his practice of dressing up as the Grim Reaper.
In the wake of yet another death in prison – the 11th in just two years – several inmates complained that Dalli would often put on a black robe and stalk the prison’s corridors at night, tapping on cell doors with his scythe.
However, the former AFM colonel insists his costume is meant to instill discipline.
“I’m not doing it as a joke. I do it to remind prisoners that death will come for them sooner or later – probably sooner in here – and that they should always be prepared to meet their maker.
The director also justified his actions by saying that the Grim Reaper robe was not his only costume.
“Sometimes I dress up as a king and get the prisoners to carry me around on a gilded litter. I’ve even dressed up as a ballerina and pranced around the place on occasion, just to keep them on their toes, if you’ll pardon the pun.”
Dalli added that he often made prisoners wear costumes too.
“It’s not all death and gloom in here, you know. The other day we dressed a few of the inmates in the red jumpsuits and masks from Money Heist and pretended to stage a breakout. A few of them got shot by the prison guards, but it was all in good fun.”
