Prime Minister Robert Abela has ended the year with yet another U-turn, this time taking back the Christmas present he had just given to his wife Lydia.
Abela had gifted his wife a Garmin GPSMAP 722 GPS Chartplotter, a high-end marine radar system used for identifying other sea vessels and land obstacles, as well as weather monitoring.
A source within the Abela household said Lydia’s reaction upon unwrapping the large GPS screen was not as ecstatic as the Prime Minister had been expecting.
“Robert was confused because, over the past few months, Lydia had been strongly hinting that she wanted a ‘Garmin’,” the source said, likely referring to a top-of-the-range sports watch.
After convening an emergency cabinet meeting and consulting ministers on Tuesday morning, Abela announced that he would be taking the gift back and installing it on his yacht instead.
In a statement to his wife following the meeting, the Prime Minister strenuously denied that this had been the plan all along, adding that he thought it would be useful for her to know the location of reefs, shoals, and other obstacles while she was out running.
Meanwhile, it remains unclear whether Abela will also be taking back the present given to daughter Giorgia Mae, a subscription to Yachting and Boating World Magazine.
Lydia Abela is now demanding a public inquiry into his actions.
