‘Shame on you’, Keith Schembri tells corrupt traffic police

Keith Schembri has told police officers accused of fraud and corruption that they should be ashamed of themselves.

The former OPM chief of staff did not hold back when talking about the 40 officers from the traffic section who were arrested in recent days, after a whistleblower revealed widespread abuse related to overtime payments in the force’s traffic section.

“The allegations surrounding our police force have left me shocked to my core. To those officers I say ‘shame on you!’, Schembri wrote on his Facebook page.

“How dare you steal public money and think you can get away with it? Your job is to serve and protect, not enrich yourselves illegally,” he said.

Schembri added that he was especially disturbed by allegations that police demanded money from construction companies in exchange for turning a blind eye to traffic violations.

“I can’t even begin imagine what sort of unscrupulous scoundrel you have to be to take money from businesses in return for granting them favours. It makes my blood boil, it really does.”

The Facebook post proved popular among Schembri’s Facebook followers, with former Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi and ex-OPM staffer Neville Gafà posting ‘heart’ reactions.

“Prosit, well said. I was also left imbellaħ by the pulizija’s blatant disregard għal-liġi. Shame on them indeed,” Mizzi commented.
