A feared shortage of wheat and other grains due to the ongoing war in Ukraine can be mitigated by building more supermarkets on ODZ land, according to Prime Minister Robert Abela.
Speaking at a campaign event, Abela once again insisted that Malta’s food security was not under threat.
“While other countries are worried they will face shortages of staple foods, in Malta we are lucky to have the highest number of supermarkets per square kilometre in the world. This will guarantee that everyone will have enough to eat no matter what happens,” Abele said.
The Prime Minister added that, if necessary, more supermarkets could be built on “useless” farmland.
“I’ve never been food shopping myself, as I’ve always had a maid to do that for me, but from what I gather, food magically reappears on supermarket shelves when they’re empty. So it stands to reason that the more supermarkets you have, the more food there will be.
“And of course, if we build more ODZ supermarkets, we’ll also need to create new roads. Once again, we’re fortunate to have so much worthless agricultural land that we can tarmac over. We truly are blessed to live in Malta,” he said.
