Start behaving or no more road money for you, angry Brussels tells Malta

Karl Stennienibarra

The European Commission has told Malta it won’t give it any more road money unless it starts behaving like a civilised country.

Earlier this week, the EC highlighted several of Malta’s shortcomings, including golden passports, bird trapping, and taxes on second-hand car imports from other EU countries.

But after the government dismissed Brussels’ criticism on the cash-for-citizenship scheme, Brussels has put its foot down and threatened to take drastic action.

“We’ve had it with your behavior, mister. This isn’t how we raised you. If you don’t get in line and sort yourself out, we’ll withhold your pocket money and you won’t be able to build more roads,” an angry EC told Malta.

“Bird trapping is scientific research…do you think we were born yesterday? And stop selling passports to Chinese and Russian people. They’re a bad influence on you. We don’t care if Cyprus does it too. They’ll be getting a telling off after you.

“Let’s see if your friends still think you’re cool when you can’t make any more fancy flyovers and pretend you paid for them yourself. Speaking of flyovers, we think you’re overdoing it anyway. We heard you’re planning on putting one right in the middle of a town. What is this, Bangladesh?”

Following the Commission’s ultimatum, Maltese MEP Alex Agius Saliba threatened to report the Commission to social services, before stomping out of the European Parliament building.
