Hunting federation FKNK has claimed that turtle doves have begun espousing Nazi ideology, in an attempt to convince the Maltese courts to allow the spring hunting season to open as planned.
On Tuesday, a court upheld a request by BirdLife to stop spring hunting for turtle dove from starting again on April 17, and will consider the merits of the case in a sitting next week.
Insisting that FKNK needed to carry out a ‘special ornithological operation’ to deal with the threat posed by far-right turtle doves, FKNK president Lucas Micallef said the small migratory birds would turn Malta into a fascist dictatorship if they were not dealt with immediately.
“Our intelligence officers recently decoded the songs of turtle doves, and discovered they were replete with anti-semitism, a plot to overthrow the Maltese government, as well as plans to carry out a genocide on Jewish bird species. They have also stopped calling themselves European turtle doves, and now refer to themselves as Arian turtle doves,” Micallef said at the start of a three-hour-long speech, during which he also showed a photo of a flock of turtle doves flying in a Swastika-shaped formation.
“History teaches us that the only language that Nazis understand is violence, and so we hunters must be allowed to head to our hides and once again take up arms against this avian scourge. Anything less would amount to the same kind of appeasement that allowed Hitler to begin his war of conquest.”
Micallef went on to accuse BirdLife of encouraging the spread of Nazism for its own ends.
“We have recently received information that BirdLife has secretly been operating a bio lab at the Għadira Nature Reserve, where they are developing a Nazi uber-bird that is capable of killing a hunter. While this is not something that you will hear about in the mainstream media, it represents an existential threat to hunters. We would launch an aerial bombardment against it, but unfortunately we only have shotguns.”
Meanwhile, Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, who is also responsible for hunting, said he endorsed the denazification efforts of the FKNK.
“The threat of Neo-Nazi turtle doves is very real and very dangerous, and my support for FKNK’s war against them has nothing to do the federation financing my re-election campaign,” the minister said.
