Workers at the MUŻA national art gallery in Valletta have finished permanently replacing all paintings in the museum with portraits of Joseph and Michelle Muscat.
The initiative is intended to encourage more people to appreciate the Prime Minister and his wife.
“There’s this idea that loving Joseph and Michelle is something only uneducated working class people from the South can do,” Culture Minister Owen Bonnici told Bis-Serjetà.
“But with these wonderful masterpieces, we hope to make our King and Queen more accessible to the artsy, intellectual bourgeoise who have historically been excluded from Joseph worship.”
The chairman of the Valletta Cultural Agency, Jason Micallef, also praised the gallery’s new direction.
“As someone who only recently found out that the Mona Lisa, The Last Supper and the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel weren’t in fact painted by Ninja Turtles, I’m delighted by MUŻA’s new direction. Let’s face it, all art is a bit rubbish, but at least now people don’t have to stare at boring landscapes and can instead gaze in wonder at the face of our glorious leader,” Micallef said.
The paintings that used to hang in the museum have been thrown in a skip.
