Former deputy police commissioner Silvio Valletta watched The Notebook with murder suspect Yorgen Fenech, it has emerged.
The Notebook is a 2004 romantic drama film starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as a young couple who fall in love in the 1940s.
The revelation, made by Valletta himself to Bis-Serjetà, raises further questions about the close relationship between the man accused of murdering Daphne Caruana Galizia, and the former chief investigator of the case.
“Before it gets leaked to the media by other people, I want to tell you about another meeting I had with Fenech several years ago,” Valletta said.
“In 2009, Yorgen invited me and Justyne over to his Portomaso penthouse for a film night. Justyne was ill so I went alone.
“We went to a DVD rental place in St Julian’s. Yorgen had seen every action film they had, so I pointed at The Notebook, even though it looked a bit soppy. He said he didn’t care what we watched as long as he got to spend some time with his good friend Silvio.”
Valletta stressed that he paid for the DVD, as well as the drinks and snacks the pair picked up before heading back to the penthouse.
“Despite my initial reservations, I’m not ashamed to say I really enjoyed the film, and that I shed a tear during the rain scene. You can call it an over-sentimental chick flick all you like, but I thought Gosling and McAdams’s chemistry was amazing.
Valletta added that Fenech did not share his positive feelings towards the film.
He said it was gay and wanted to watch Scarface again.”
