Giannella de Marco, the mother and defence lawyer of Gianluca Caruana Curran, has used the ‘good boy’ defence while representing Yorgen Fenech’s lawyer in court.
Caruana Curran and fellow defence lawyer Charles Mercieca were today charged with attempting to bribe journalist Ivan Martin in exchange for favourable coverage of Fenech.
“Your honour, my baby is an angel who can do no wrong,” de Marco said before entering a ‘not guilty’ plea on behalf of her client/son.
“Gianninu has always been a sweet, innocent little lamb. I remember when he was still at school, during parents day his teachers would always say what a well-behaved, good boy he was. And he hasn’t changed since,” she added, before comparing him to a young Jesus Christ.
The lawyer, who is the brother of Nationalist Party MP Mario de Marco, told the court there could only be two possible explanations for the alleged bribery attempt.
Either Ivan Martin is a liar who’s trying to make my Giannikins look bad, or Charles put him up to it. I always thought he was a bad influence, to be honest. You can’t expect better from the son of a Labour MP.”
De Marco asked the magistrate to consider the mitigating circumstance of Caruana Curran being from a prominent Nationalist family.
“How could my Gigi, the grandson of the great Guido de Marco, be capable of anything so untoward?”
“Mum stop it you’re embarrassing me,” Caruana Curran could be heard saying.
