The government has announced an improved remuneration package for striking teachers, consisting of one free banana per week.
The strike action by state and church school educators, organised by the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT), went ahead on Monday after talks with the government aimed at bettering the first “insulting” offer failed.
Following the strike, Minister for Education Clifton Grima said the government acknowledged that its previous offer was not adequate, and was now offering a better pay package.
“Teachers are the bedrock of a society and deserve to be generously remunerated for their invaluable work. We believe the latest offer of one delicious banana per week, in addition to the previous pay increase of course, is a more-than-fair reward.
Grima went on to praise the benefits of bananas.
“It’s no accident that we chose bananas. They’re arguably one of best, if not the best fruits. Rich in nutrients, vitamins and minerals, they’re exactly what teachers need to stay healthy, energised and focused as they educate the nation’s youth and ensure a bright future for Malta.”
The minister added that the pay package was also scaleable.
“After 10 years of service, teachers will be entitled to one banana and one apple per week. No thanks are necessary, dear teachers!”
