Two in three Maltese people thinking of starting a podcast, study shows

The majority of Maltese people are actively thinking about starting their own podcast, a recent study has shown.

The study was carried out by Professor Imona Jetski at the American University of Malta.

When asked whether they are considering starting a podcast, 67 per cent of people surveyed responded ‘yes’.

“It seems people no longer think it’s enough to express their opinions to their friends on Facebook or at the bar. Now they feel like it’s their purpose in life to broadcast their views to the entire country, over the course of a three-hour-long episode that could realistically be edited down to 40 minutes. Or at least try to and end up getting 1,000 views on Youtube,” Prof Jetski said.

Prof Jetski noted that the desire to start a podcast was prevalent across both sexes and multiple age groups.

“Of course, the content of the podcast depends on the demographic in question. If a man hosts a podcast it’s likely to include a lot of inane waffling, forced humour, 40-somethings talking about sex like they’re teenagers, and the word ‘bro’. On the other hand, the female cohort tends to talk about women’s things, and also a lot of inane waffling that you have to play at 2x speed.”

Prof Jetski warned the country was facing podcast oversaturation.

“Given Malta’s small population, realistically it has space for three, maybe four podcasts. Incidentally, that’s also the number of famous people in Malta who have a personality and are worth interviewing. The ideal outcome is that people who start podcasts realise they aren’t as funny or insightful as they thought they were and pack it in after a few episodes.

“But also there are a lot of companies who are willing to sponsor all the inane waffling so things aren’t looking good,” she said.
