A Maltese teacher is worried that the Education Ministry will force her to stop wearing her nipple rings, after the authorities banned school pupils from wearing piercings of any kind.
The ban, which is the most pressing issue in Malta right now, came into effect after a mother complained to her 12-year-old son’s school in Gozo because he wasn’t allowed to wear an earring.
“I’m reminded of that quote – first they came for the children’s piercings, but I did not speak out because I am not a child’,” said secondary school English teacher Rachel Aquilina.
“But then what if one day they decide that nipple rings aren’t appropriate jewellery for a teacher to wear during class, and the children won’t defend me because I was too cowardly to defend them?”
Aquilina added that the feeling of cold metal running through her nipples sharpened her mind and made her a better teacher.
“I don’t think I could teach Shakespeare without them,” she said.
Education Minister Evarist Bartolo has insisted his ministry does not intend to ban nipple piercings.
“As a former teacher myself, I know full well how focusing they can be. I just wish we’d had air-conditioned classrooms back in my day.”

Editor’s note: The original name of the teacher mentioned in the article was incorrect. The error is regretted. It’s definitely 100% Rachel Aquilina who wears nipple rings to school, and no on else.
