Maltese people have vowed not to let uncertainty get in the way of their belief that someone tried to assassinate Melvin Theuma.
Following the news that Theuma – the alleged middleman in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia – had been found with multiple knife wounds, social media was awash with theories that he was the victim of an attempted murder.
In a press conference this morning, police commissioner Angelo Gafà stated that initial findings and witness testimony indicated Theuma’s injuries were mostly likely self-inflicted, but this did little to slow down the rumours.
Bis-Serjetà spoke to several people in Valletta this afternoon to see what they thought of last night’s incident.
“I believe a hitman – probably Russian, they’re always Russian – leapt across the rooftops of Swieqi, broke into Melvin’s home despite the presence of several police guards, stabbed him several times without leaving any signs of a struggle, didn’t make sure he was dead, and then vanished like a ghost, and there’s nothing you can say to convince me otherwise.” – Miriam Xerri, 38, from San Ġwann.
“As an armchair doctor and forensic detective who loves watching spy thrillers, I think I’m qualified to say with 100 per cent certainty that someone tried to murder Melvin Theuma and made it look like a suicide…by stabbing him in his kidney,” – Joshua Borg, 27, from Qawra.
“Everyone knows that people don’t commit suicide by stabbing themselves. I mean, I haven’t done any research to confirm that statement, but who has the time to Google things anymore? I have comments to write on Facebook,” Paul Xuereb, 42, from Rabat.
“I heard from a friend of a friend of a friend that Melvin Theuma was decapitated but doctors managed to sew his head back on.” Sarah Tanti, 25, Fgura.
“Jason Azzopardi suggested it was a murder attempt, and it’s not like he’s ever shot bullshit from his hip before.” – Helen Agius, 55, Żebbug.
“It’s true that, given what we know, the simpler conclusion is that Melvin tried to kill himself, but the memes wouldn’t be as good,” Karl Abela, 22, Sliema.
“After what we’ve witnessed over the past few months, can you blame me for suspecting foul play? The police probably opened the front door for the assassin and then paid for his taxi home when he’d finished.” – Matthew Galea, 34, Żabbar,
