Health Minister Chris Fearne has clarified that a fetus can be aborted under the proposed legal amendment if it is found to be a Nationalist.
The government is proposing the introduction of a new clause in the Criminal Code that allows doctors to terminate a pregnancy if it presents a serious risk to a woman’s life or health.
After the bill passed its second reading in parliament in December, it will now be debated at committee stage, where further changes can be suggested.
“There’s a lot of confusion surrounding the bill, so I just wanted to clarify that yes, this amendment would allow doctors to terminate a pregnancy if tests show the fetus is Nationalist,” Dr Fearne told journalists despite the fact that none of them had asked for this specific clarification.
“Given that being a PN supporter can be classed as a severe disability, it would be perfectly reasonable if a woman did not want to give birth to it,” he added.
Asked how a fetus could be identified as being a Nationalist, Dr Fearne said:
“Medicine has come a long way over the past two decades. For example, doctors can insert a photo of Eddie Fenech Adami, or a speaker playing ‘We Take The Chance’ by Modern Talking, into the uterus, and if the fetus wriggles about with joy, that’s a sure sign it will be doomed to a life of excruciating pain if allowed to live,” the minister said.
Reacting to Dr Fearne’s statement, a furious Nationalist Party said that despite the fact it was staunchly pro-life, it would advocate the termination of Labour fetuses in retaliation.
“You can tell a fetus is Labour if you punch it in the head and it says ‘Grazzi ministru’,” the PN said.
