Infrastructure Malta has announced an ambitious project to seed rain clouds with cement in an attempt to prevent the floods that wreaked havoc across the country earlier this week.
Cloud seeding normally involves adding small, ice-like particles to clouds in an attempt to make them produce rain.
However, Infrastructure Malta’s plan is to do exactly the opposite.
“As soon as we see rain clouds forming, we’ll send up a plane and spray them with cement, sealing the clouds shut and stopping rain from falling and flooding our beautiful roads,” Infrastructure Malta CEO Frederick Azzopardi said.
Azzopardi said the cement would be provided by developer Joseph Portelli, while the project itself has been entrusted to Bonnici Brothers.
When asked if this could result in chunks of concrete falling to the ground and causing damage to people and property, he replied:
“You people are never happy. We widen roads, you say we’re destroying agricultural land. We add cycle lanes, you say that 30 centimetres is too narrow. We come up with an ingenious solution to the problem of flooding, you say you don’t want concrete falling on you. We can’t win.”
Other options considered by Infrastructure Malta were creating a giant flying bulldozer to push the clouds away, expropriating the sk, and an anti-rain dance performed by Minister Ian Borg.
