Malta to preserve point earned against Latvia in sealed glass case

Malta will preserve the point earned in the 1-1 draw against Latvia in a seal glass case.

Malta took the lead in last night’s UEFA Nation’s League group game at Ta’ Qali through Kyrian Nwoko, but Latvia were level 10 minutes later thanks to an own goal by Matthew Guillaumier.

Nevertheless, Malta held on and earned a precious point against arguably the strongest team in League D Group 1.

“Yes it’s only the Nation’s League, a tournament that no one seems to know the purpose of, but a point is a point,” said Malta coach Devis Mangia, who took charge of just his second game.

“I also know how rare it is for Malta to earn a point, and I want this to be the start of something great. So today’s point will be preserved and put on display for all to see,” he said, explaining that, after the match, a 60-centimetre-tall number ‘1’ that represents the point had been cast from solid gold.

The point will be put in a sealed glass case, and will be displayed outside Ta’ Qali stadium. Socially distanced pilgrimages will be organised from tomorrow.

Meanwhile, after earning a point from his first two games in charge, Mangia has had the best start of any Malta coach in history
