Maltese family tears apart panettone like horde of ravenous zombies

Karl Stennienibarra

A Maltese family has devoured a panettone like a horde of zombies ripping apart a fresh corpse.

Paul Calleja, 45, from Tarxien, received the festive Italian sweet bread from his workplace as part of a Christmas hamper

Having left the panettone unopened on the kitchen table for the past few days, Mr Calleja and his family finally decided to dig in after dinner this evening.

“At first my wife got a knife out and started cutting it delicately and putting the slices onto plates,” Mr Calleja said.

“But then we all got overcome by a sort of bread-lust and started ripping chunks out of it and stuffing them straight into our mouths.”

“As soon as I tasted the first bite, I lost control of myself,” wife Debbie Calleja said. “I felt like my yearning for panettone could never be sated, so I tore as much as I could.”

“I’ve never seen her look so feral,” Mr Calleja agreed.

The Callejas’ children, David and Michaela, also took part in the frenzy.

“I got home from work a bit late, so I missed the start,” Michael said.

“When I opened the front door I could hear growling noises coming from the kitchen. So I went in and saw them all ripping this panettone apart like zombies rending the flesh from a much-loved secondary character. in The Walking Dead I was horrified at first, but then felt this animalistic desire to join in.

The feeding frenzy lasted just 15 minutes.

“When the panettone was finished, we were so ashamed of what we’d just done that we could barely make eye contact with each other,” Michaela said.

At the time of writing, the family had been overcome with panettone lust again, and were hunting raisins and pieces of candied fruit that may have escaped into the packaging.
