A Maltese landlord who tested positive for Covid-19 is charging the virus rent.
Martin Bonnici, 54, owns several properties in the Sliema area, most of which he rents out to foreign nationals. He tested positive for the coronavirus after coming into contact with one of his tenants who later also tested positive.
“I read an article today that said Covid-19 might be able live in a human body for up to 37 days. My first thought was, “It had damn well better be paying me rent!” Bonnici told Bis-Serjetà via Skype from his bed at Mater Dei hospital.
“Sure, my lungs aren’t in the best condition because I smoke and haven’t exercised in ages, but that doesn’t mean Covid-19 can just squat in them for free. I’m managing a body, not a charity.”
The landlord said he would be charging the virus €300 per week, excluding bills.
“That’s 300 cash in hand, wink wink. If I charge every copy the virus makes of itself inside my body. I’ll be able to afford that Ferrari in no time,” he said excitedly.
“Oh, and the deposit is €1,000. If I find so much as a scratch on my pulmonary tissue when Covid finally decides to vacate me, I’m keeping all of it.”
