A Maltese man has received the honorary title of Sbejjaħ, after being promoted from his previous rank of Bro.

The title was bestowed on the man, 26-year-old Kyle Vella from Rabat, by his friends during a ceremony at San Anton Palace last night.

“In recognition of his recent acts of friendship, such as lending Marco five euros to buy lunch; giving Luca a lift from Gianpula back to Mosta despite living in Rabat, and being a good wingman to Fabian when he was trying to get with that mazza Rachel, we are proud to bequeath to Kyle the prestigious title of Sbejjaħ,” said the head of the friend group, Simon Briffa.

Mr Vella was delighted with the promotion.

“While being a Bro is great and everything, Sbejjaħ is a massive step up. I don’t think I’m particularly good looking, so to be greeted with ‘Aw sbejjaħ!’ by my male friends will do wonders for my self-esteem.”

Vella’s promotion was given in full accordance with the protocols of the Maltese Male Hierarchy of Endearment, as set out by Manuel Dimech in 1882.

‘Sbejjaħ’ is the fifth-highest rank in the Hierarchy, which consists of the following titles:

Man > Chalie > Kuġin > Bro > Sbejjaħ > Bello > Qalbi > Boss > Kink > Dnegel.
