New Air Malta begins charging passengers for emotional baggage

Karl Stennienibarra

Passengers travelling with Malta’s revamped national airline will no longer be allowed to carry their emotional baggage onboard for free.

The policy change comes alongside KM Malta Airlines’ decision to limit the size of physical hand luggage that passengers can take with them in the cabin without incurring a charge.

Should you have any unresolved issues from your past that you are still grappling with, you will need to pay €50 per issue that you wish to – or have no choice but to – take on board.

According to the airline’s website, examples of emotional baggage include childhood issues, failed relationships and unfulfilled dreams.

Before boarding, passengers will be required to undergo an hour-long examination by a psychologist to determine how much emotional baggage they are carrying with them.

KM Malta Airlines CEO David Curmi defended the decision.

“This change is not motivated solely by financial considerations. These days, people have more emotional baggage than ever. This adds considerable psychic weight to the aircraft, which in turn gives off a bad vibe in the cabin,” he said.

Curmi clarified that passengers will be allowed to take a small amount of carry-on trauma with them.

“This could be an awkward social interaction you had that makes you feel embarrassed, like when you walk past someone you know but don’t stop and talk to them because you’re scared you’ll have nothing to say, but then you worry you offended them. Anything more upsetting than that, and you’ll need to cough up.”
