The Malta Police Force has replaced officers stationed in Paceville with mannequins in uniform.
The decision was made following a violent incident that occurred in the nightlife hotspot on New Year’s Eve.
“We realised there’s no point in keeping human officers in Paceville when they don’t actually do anything, Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà told Bis-Serjetà.
“Now, we could change the way we police the area by giving better training to officers so they can be more proactive and less scared to take initiative. But that sounds like a lot of work, and this saves us some money. And in any case, have you seen the size of those bouncers?”
The mannequins will not be complete without a purpose. When passersby approach them, a sensor will trigger an automated voice prompt that tells people to go to the station and file a report.
Gafà added that should the mannequins prove successful, their remit would be expanded to other issues, such as domestic violence and corruption.
“Having said that, we will continue to commit all our human resources to prosecuting comedians.”
