PN head of strategy Chris Peregin has been locked in the basement of Dar Ċentrali for the past two weeks, Bis-Serjetà is reliably informed.
Peregin’s predicament could go some way to explaining why party leader Bernard Grech has seemingly been pandering to the PN’s conservative faction lately, taking unprogressive stances on the cannabis law reform and the abortion debate.
After the former Lovin Malta CEO joined the PN, many expected him to modernise the party and make them a more enticing proposition to liberal Maltese people.
Sources in the party said they had not seen Peregin around in a long while.
“Then yesterday I went down to the basement to get our white surrender flags after the terrible week we’ve had, only to find it locked. From behind the door, I could hear someone saying, “Is anyone there? Maa it’s dark in here like.”
Peregin is said to have also pleaded:
“Please get me out quick. Eddie Fenech Adami is down here too and he thinks I’m Dom Mintoff.”
A search for the key to the basement is currently underway. And while no one has come forward to claim responsibility for Peregin’s imprisonment, various MPs said Edwin Vassallo – one of the most prominent traditionalist voices in the party – had told them Peregin was off sick with banana AIDS.
It is unclear how Vassallo managed to lure Peregin into the basement, although one PN insider suggested the MP from Mosta had told Peregin that Roberta Metsola had requested a secret meeting with a view to usurping Grech as party leader.
