Maltese singer Aidan Cassar is suing British pop star Dua Lipa, after he accused her of copying his work.
According to Cassar, elements of Lipa’s song ‘Physical’, as well as its music video, closely resemble his own single ‘Juliette’ and its video. Cassar claims that Lipa’s video for ‘Houdini’ is also derivative.
“First Clean Bandit copied my song ‘Naħseb Fik’, then Harry Styles wholesale ripped off ‘Strawberry’ and called it ‘As It Was’, but I let those slide because I’m a nice guy, and they’re new artists still finding their feet, so it’s natural that they’re influenced by established, successful artists like myself,” Cassar said.
“But this is the last straw. It’s one thing to copy a chord progression or beat, but to steal someone’s music video as well? So lazy. I won’t let that hack Dua Lipa get away with it. I’ll be seeing her in court.”
Cassar also speculated that Lipa’s success was not entirely down to talent or hard work.
“Think about it – she has dual British and Albanian citizenship, so she has not one, but two governments helping her out and giving her a leg up over everyone else. Whereas my achievements are entirely the result of my own efforts and not at all down to my intimate relationships with ministers and parastatal CEOs,” he said.
Meanwhile, Cassar took the opportunity to announce his next single.
“It’s called ‘Fjuri’ and it’s an empowering break-up song about the importance of self-love. I just hope no one steals that from me too,” he said.
