Nationalist Party leader Bernard Grech has announced that the party is now officially pro-choice.
The policy U-turn on abortion comes after a recent Maltatoday poll showed that trust in PN and Grech had slipped further following the party’s adoption of a hardline anti-choice stance.
“I thought we were onto a winner when we made fun of Andrea Prudente in parliament and spread conspiracy theories about her. But for some reason, a lot of women didn’t seem to like that, so we’re doing a complete one-eighty,” Grech told Bis-Serjetà.
“From now on, both the party and I are fully in favour of abortion, provided free of charge by the state, with no limits. On the contrary, we believe women should be able to murder their children after birth too, because that’s what pro-choice activists want, right?”
Grech added that he would be instructing all PN MPs to vote in favour of the upcoming legal amendments to the country’s abortion laws.
“I look forward to riding the wave of PN’s renewed popularity that this about-face will inevitably cause,” he said.
The party’s new direction will be officially inaugurated at an event next week, which will feature live performances from pop stars Sam Smith and Lizzo.
Asked what the party would do if the policy reversal didn’t have the desired effect, Grech replied:
“I guess the only remaining option for us would be to go full far-right and call for all foreigners to be deported. And their e-scooters too.”
